Abstract
Following Bali et al.(2017), we examine whether the beta anomaly in the Korean stock market can be explained by the demand for lottery-like stocks. Unlike the study in the U.S stock market, the beta anomaly remains significant even after controlling the lottery demand. First, we confirm the beta anomaly by showing that a zero-cost strategy of longing a high beta portfolio and shorting a low beta portfolio produces significant and negative Fama-French 3 factor alpha. Then, we demonstrate the abnormal return of the zero-cost strategy using MAX which represents the firm’s lottery characteristics as defined by Bali et al.(2011). Having proven the existence of the beta anomaly and the preference for lottery-like stocks in the Korean stock market, we use MAX to neutralize the lottery-demand and reexamined the beta anomaly using double-sorted portfolio analysis and Fama-MacBeth(1973) regression analysis. All of results detect the beta anomaly even after controlling/neutralizing the lottery-demand, MAX.
