Abstract

This study analyzes the effects of U.S interest rate adjustments on the Korean stock market. It examines six important variables that are of interest: (i) interactive effect of the interest rate adjustments and the U.S stock market returns (ii) persistence of the adjustment effects, (iii)adjustment effects on the volatility of the Korean stock market, (iv)casual relation between co-movement of the U.S and Korean stock market returns and the interest adjustments, and (v) interactive effect of the foreign investment ratio and the interest rate adjustments. I explore an event study to analyze these effects. Study results show the followings. First, the upward (downward)movements of the US interest rate lower (raise) the KOSPI returns. This result is consistent with the existing literature. Second, upward adjustments of the interest rate by FOMC significantly reinforce the positive casual relation between U.S and Korea stock market returns. This finding implies that investors tend to be more sensitive when the FOMC actions affect expected losses then gains. Third, persistence of the adjustment effects is not founded in the KOSPI returns. The stock market is constantly influenced by other news and the effect may not persist too long. Forth, the volatility in the Korea stock market is diminished by the positive interest rate adjustments. This result indicates that market uncertainty is removed more clearly by the negative external shock. Finally, as the proportion of foreign investment increases, the influence of the US interest rate adjustments on the Korean stock market is lowered.
