한국의 해외직접투자 결정요인: 국가-산업 단위 패널 분석

초록

본 연구는 한국기업의 현지법인매출 자료를 바탕으로 2012∼2015 기간 동안, 27개 투자대상국과 19개 제조업이 교차하는 국가-산업 단위 표본을 이용해 해외직접투자 결정요인을 분석했다. 최근의 추이를 반영해 시장 접근형 직접투자에 초점을 맞추었으며, 수출과 대비되는 현지생산의 이점을 식별할 국가 및 산업 특성 변수를 선별했다. 다양한 추정모형 분석 결과, 사업체 수준의 규모의 경제가 작고, 전체 기업 수준의 규모의 경제가 클수록 현지생산을 통한 매출이 통계적으로 유의하게 증가했다. 수출비용인 운송비용은 유의한 양의 효과를, 현지 법인세율은 부의 효과를 보였다. 이는 수평적 투자의 핵심 결정요인인 근접-집중 상관관계가 한국의 사례에도 유효함을 보여주는 증거이다. 산업 비교우위 및 산업 유효세율은 현지생산을 증가시켰고, 중력변수 모형인 거리와 시장 규모는 각각 음과 양의 영향을 미쳤다. 그 간 소홀히 취급됐던 산업비교 우위의 역할을 부각시킨 점, 현지국 특성과 국내 산업 특성의 상호작용을 분석한 점, 최근 추세인 시장 접근형 직접투자에 초점을 둔 점 등이 기존 문헌과의 차별화 요소라 할 수 있다.

Abstract

Using a country-industry unit panel data set covering 27 host countries and 19 Korean manufacturing sectors for the period 2012-2015, this paper investigates the country and industry determinants of Korea’s outward direct investment. The estimation results across various specifications show that ‘proximity-concentration trade-off’ factors have statistically significant effects on affiliate sales: economies of scale at the corporate level relative to those at the plant level, port inefficiency and lower local corporate tax rate all would increase foreign production. The gravity variables such as distance and GDP also show an expected estimated result. This finding is in line with the theoretical predictions and the empirical results of the past studies using U.S. data sources.
