FDI 동기를 중심으로 한 중국의 대외직접투자 결정요인 분석: 투자동기의 시기별 변화와 지역별 차이 규명을 중심으로

초록

본 연구는 중국기업의 해외직접투자(ODI)의 동기가 무엇인지를 규명하고 더 나아가 투자동의를 시기별 변화와 투자대상국의 지역별 차이를 규명하고자 하였다. 1991년부터 2005년 말까지의 기간 동안에 이루어진 전 세계 국가에 대한 중국의 해외직접투자 금액을 종속 변수로 한 토빗분석 결과, 몇 가지 흥미로운 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 먼저 전체 표본을 대상으로 한 분석을 통해, 중국의 해외직접투자가 대외적으로는 기존의 수출시장을 유지·확대하기 위한 목적과 천연자원을 확보하기 위한 목적으로 이루어졌으며, 대내적으로는 풍부한 외환보유고를 활용하기 위해, 그리고 정부의 해외투자 자유화 정책에 부응하기 위해 이루어졌음을 알 수 있었다. 시기별, 지역별로도 투자 결정요인 상에 뚜렷한 차이가 나타나는 것을 알 수 있었다. 시기별로는 투자 자유화 정책 추진 이전 단계에서는 천연자원 확보동기와 기존의 수출시장 유지·확대를 위한 동기가 중요한 결정요인으로 작용했지만, 자유화 정책 추진 이후에는 신규시장 개척과 지식자산 확보 동기가 중요한 결정요인으로 작용함을 알 수 있었다. 지역별로는 선진국에 대한 투자는 지식자산 확보를 위해, 아프리카와 오세아니아 지역에 대한 투자는 천연자원 확보를 위해, 그리고 아시아권 지역에 대한 투자는 신시장 개척을 위한 목적임을 확인할 수 있었다.

Abstract

China is not only one of the largest host countries of FDI in the world, but is also emerging as one of the most significant outward investors. While a great deal of literature has been devoted to China's inward foreign direct investment over the past two decade, much less academic attention has been given to China's outward investment. Studies generally analyse this phenomenon by reviewing aggregate secondary data published by Chinese agencies and seek to identify the driver for Chinese ODI. Little research has been done on why Chinese companies invest in particular countries or regions. This article examines the relationship between China's outward FDI motivation and the choice of host countries. A number of factors explain the ODI of Chinese firms. The determinants of Chinese ODI include the desire to secure product markets(market-seeking motivation), resource-seeking motivation and strategic asset-seeking motivation to acquire foreign advanced technology. Our research show that these motivations depend on changes over time and regions
