Abstract

This study was intended to confirm that the relative effects of China's economic growth on the Korean economic growth and stock market and to find the process of the effects by using quarterly data over 1993:1-2007:4. We found that the effects of export competition on the Korea's economic growth has a strong negative effect, but there is some possibility of being offset through the positive effect of Korea's exports to China. In case of Korean stock price, it is found that we have a limitation to explain a change of stock price by using the same factors which affect the growth of real sector because of unclear responses of explanatory variables. The effects of each explanatory variable, however, are very different in industrial classification. The signs of the corresponding variables which bring about China's economic growth, in most cases, are consistent with the expected ones. In addition, the results of path analysis show that investment is the most important factor among the explanatory variables which influence economic growth directly, and the higher comparative advantage of China's exports in the third country has a negative effect on Korean economic growth. These results imply that both the investment and the competitiveness of exports are very important for the stable growth of Korean economy
