본 연구에서는 Kehoe and Ruhl(2013)의 방법론을 우리나라의 세분화된 수출통계에 적용하여 수출다양도의 변화 추이와 함께 전체 수출에서 얼마만큼 중요한 역할을 담당하는지를 대략적으로 살펴보았다. 구체적으로는 과거 수출이 미미하였던 최하위 10% 품목군의 수출 비중을 수출다양화를 분석하는 핵심지표로 활용하였다. 논문의 주된 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 수출다양도는 중장기 시계에서 총수출과 더욱 긴밀한 상관관계를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 장기적인 수출 신장세를 달성하기 위해 수출다양도의 확대가 동반될 필요성이 있다는 점을 시사한다. 둘째, 기존 연구와 부합되게 주요국과의 FTA는 수출다양도를 확대하는 데 긍정적인 효과가 있는 것으로 파악되었다. 끝으로, 주요 제조업을 살펴보면 화학 및 산업기계설비 산업에서 수출다양도가 비교적 큰 폭으로 확대되고 있는 반면, 전기전자기기 산업은 2017년 이후 수출다양도가 하락 후 정체 상태에 있는 것으로 파악되었다. 따라서, 전기전자기기 산업이 장기적으로 지속가능한 수출 신장세를 유지하기 위해서는 새로운 경쟁우위 품목을 개발하기 위한 적극적인 연구개발 및 지원이 필요하다고 판단된다.
Abstract
This paper briefly examines the evolution of the extensive margin and its importance in Korean exports by applying the method of Kehoe and Ruhl (2013) to highly disaggregated Korean export data. Precisely, the extensive export margin is analyzed by using the key indicator known as the least-traded goods, which are goods with zero trade as well as goods with very small amounts of trade. The main results of the paper are as follows. First, the extensive margin has shown a closer correlation with total exports over the mid- and long-term periods. This finding suggests that it is necessary to accompany an expansion of the extensive margin of exports to achieve long-term export growth. Second, in line with existing studies, the major FTAs have had a positive impact on the extensive margin of exports. Finally, the present study took an overall look at the major manufacturing industries in Korea. The extensive margins in the chemical and industrial machinery & equipment industries have shown a relatively higher amount of expansion. By contrast, the electronic & electrical equipment industry has exhibited a declining and stagnant trend in its extensive margin since 2017. Therefore, in order to maintain long-term sustainable export growth in that industry, greater R&D and support will be required to search for new competitive items.
