Abstract
Walther von der Vogelweide is one of the most eminent of the Medieval German poets, and was regarded as the greatest poet and musician by his contemporaries. As a minnesinger, his chief contribution was to perfect the form and content of Minne. In the traditional Minne(hohe Minne), the poet depicts a unrequited love for an unapproachable lady of a higher position. Walther criticized that hohe Minne is too formulaic and artificial, and sings unrealistic love. Instead of highly stylized hohe Minne, he suggested a new concept of Minne(niedere Minne) in which he granted a new form and content. In ‘niedere Minne’, the poet depicts a mutual and physical relationship with a young woman whose status is not of substantial. Walther also wrote religious, didactic, and political songs. To raise the simple Spruch to a high literary level was Walther’s another contribution. Since Walther was critical of society, he expressed his ethical principles and religious faith in his religious, didactic, and political songs. In this respect Walther was the most celebrated of the Medieval German lyric poets as well as a real reformer in the history of German literature.
