본 논문은 리하르트 슈트라우스와 호프만스탈의 오페라 《낙소스의 아리아드네》의 제작 과정 에서 나타난 이들의 갈등과 대립이 작품 속에서 창조적으로 활용된 과정을 추적한다. 1911년에 구상되어 1914년에 초연되고 1916년에 개정된 《낙소스의 아리아드네》는 그 과정에서 작곡가와 대본가의 의견 충돌과 갈등이 첨예하게 드러난 작품으로, 이러한 갈등은 두 예술가의 예술을 대하는 태도의 차이에서 기인했다. 예술에 대한 태도의 차이는 곧 오페라의 두 주요 인물, 아리아 드네와 체르비네타에 관한 상반된 접근으로 이어졌고, 이는 《낙소스의 아리아드네》의 창작 과정 에 고스란히 반영되었다. 이 과정에서 두 예술가 간의 대립과 몰이해는 기획, 초연, 개정 단계의 오페라의 구조를 각각 완전히 다른 것으로 바꾸게 하는 근본적인 계기가 되었다. 본 논문은 《낙소스의 아리아드네》가 두 예술가의 대립과 갈등을 통한 상호작용의 결과물임을 주장한다.
Abstract
This paper examines the creative use of the conflicts and oppositions between Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal in the genesis of Ariadne auf Naxos. Conceived in 1911, premiered in 1914, and revised in 1916, Ariadne auf Naxos is notable for its portrayal of the creative tensions and disagreements between Strauss and Hofmannsthal, which originated from their disparate aesthetic perspectives. This divergence in aesthetic approach resulted in contrasting interpretations of the opera’s two main characters, Ariadne and Zerbinetta, which were subsequently reflected in the revising process. The confrontation and disagreement between the two artists constituted a fundamental catalyst for the opera's structure to diverge significantly at the planning, premiere, and revision stages. This paper argues that Ariadne auf Naxos is the product of the interaction between the two artists through confrontation and conflict.
