Abstract
This paper is a study of interpretation of the opera Elektra (1909) composed by Richard Strauss and concentrates on the feminist criticism to reveal the patriarchal value system of this opera. Since its premiere in 1909, Elektra has been regarded as the representative of modernism expressing the most progressive ideas until now. Elektra, the main female character, is filled with the negative images of the fin-de-siècle wearing consistent excessivity, intensity, misogyny and hysteria. Additionally, she is described as illogical, solely emotional, lack of rationality and regressive, like an animal rather than human being. Meanwhile, Elektra’s music always moves toward to the tonality in spite of its vehement and excess dissonance. In other words, her strong body including materiality and explosive energy obeys the only law, tonality. Strauss performed an experiment of harmony with his opera Elektra in order to dramatize sonic tension by distancing the music from the tonal tradition. On the other aspect, however, he implicated tonality as the musical platform because the harmonic progression is subordinate to the law of tonality that is an expression of strong tendency to cadence in terms of harmony while experimenting the acoustic discordances. As a result, Elektra reproduces the patriarchal and tonal system by alienating herself from her emotional and bodily energy, and, finally, leading her death. In this study, I consider Elektra as one of the texts that was produced in a specific circumstance, the fin-de-siècle Wien, and analyze this text in terms of both relation of power and system of value. In the context of the fin-de-siècle, the male librettist and composer put their efforts to overcome the crisis that they had experienced the social unrest, confusion of moral idea and order, degeneration and hedonism by establishing the fictional female protagonist in order to consolidate their own social consensus. Thus, the analysis of Elektra’s personality discloses the distorted concept of gender of the librettist and composer.
