Abstract
Identifying the types of paints in artworks with uncertain painting materials is veryimportant in conservation science and art history. However, it is difficult to distinguish the type ofpaint diluted in a solvent with the naked eye because the diluted paint lost its characteristic textureand gloss. Accordingly, an analysis method that can interpret the type of paint is being studied, andin particular, a non-destructive analysis method that can be analyzed without sampling is required. This study attempted to supplement the limitations of the existing artwork analysis method byexamining the applicability of ER-FT-IR, a non-destructive and non-contact analysis method. As aresult of the analysis, it was possible to distinguish between oil paint and acrylic paint through acarbonyl band with high detection sensitivity. In the case of watercolors and gouache paints whichuse the same binding medium, it was possible to distinguish them by comparing the detection intensityof extender in ATR mode, but it was difficult to compare the detection intensity of extender of thetwo paints as the overall detection intensity decreased in ER mode. Therefore, it is recommended thatcross-analysis through microscopic observation and XRF analysis is necessary when analyzingartworks.
