Abstract
Infrared imaging is a widely used non-invasive technique for preliminary investigations of painted cultural heritage. The method aims to identify and detect features such as underdrawings, text, and other details that may have been altered or faded, which are not easily visible to the naked eye. This process involves comparing and analyzing infrared images with the physical object to uncover these hidden or degraded elements. In order to capture accurate infrared images, it is essential to photograph under appropriate exposure conditions, informed by the infrared imaging properties of the various pigments used in painted cultural heritage. However, for traditional Korean pigments, with the exception of a few representative ones, the infrared imaging characteristics have yet to be thoroughly studied. Therefore, this study involved photographing 28 types of traditional pigments and acrylic paints used in conservation and restoration under five different exposure levels. The infrared imaging characteristics were analyzed based on the histograms of the captured images and their detection efficiency. The results of the study identified optimal exposure levels for capturing high-quality infrared images based on the type of pigment and allowed for the assessment of detection efficiency. Differences in infrared wavelength ranges detected by the camera were also observed. This study is expected to contribute to enhancing the accuracy and practical application of infrared imaging in the investigation of painted cultural heritage.
