Abstract
This study analyzes the characteristics of authorized textbooks for fifth-grade science under the 2015 revised curriculum in terms of the components of scientific creativity and the level of integration among these components. To this end, we partially modified the analysis framework proposed by a previous study to fit the current context and used it to analyze a total of 513 lesson topics (441 from main sessions and 72 from creative convergence sessions). The results revealed that “scientific inquiry skill” and “scientific knowledge content” of the components were frequently included in lesson topics, while “creative thinking”, “problem-solving”, and “common element” were less common. Certain variations were observed in the sub-elements of these components across lesson phases. Regarding the integration among these components, either no integration or the integration of two components was relatively common, while the integration of three or more components was relatively rare. However, the integration of three or four components occurred relatively frequently in certain lesson phases. When integration was present, four or five subtypes emerged, with certain types tending to be concentrated in specific lesson types or phases. Additionally, “scientific knowledge content” and “scientific inquiry skill” were more frequently integrated with other components, whereas “creative thinking”, “common element”, and “problem-solving ability” were less frequently integrated with others, and primarily concentrated in certain lesson phases. Finally, the study discusses the educational implications of these findings.
