Abstract

The Ssangja Chongtong Gun, manufactured in the 16th year of King Seonjo’s reign (1583), is a small tubular personal firearm used during the mid-Joseon Dynasty. This study investigated gun-manufacturing techniques focusing on the Ssangja Chongtong Gun owned by the Seokdang Museum of Dong-A University. The Ssangja Chongtong Gun is 53.3 cm in total length and 1.5 cm in diameter. There are six fuse holes and two rings, similar to bamboo nodes, on the double barrels. The handle is engraved with inscriptions describing the gun’s use and production period. There is misalignment between the barrel and handle of the gun that is due to casting; on the side, polishing marks and uneven joints formed after casting are observed. Research on its internal structure confirmed the presence of casting bubbles inside the Ssangja Chongtong Gun. Six parts that appear to be chaplets used to fix the casting mold during casting were also observed. Surface analysis of the parts identified as chaplets showed a high level of iron (Fe). Based on component analysis, the primary component of the Ssangja Chongtong Gun was determined to be bronze, a ternary alloy with copper (Cu), tin(Sn), and lead (Pb) as primary components.
