Abstract

The objective of the present study is to examine the relation of folk paintings with other genres in the general structure of Korean painting history and to determine the definite status of folk paintings in the history. The term ‘folk painting’ has so far raised many controversies and disputes, but it is a meaningful concept from the viewpoint of the history of Korean paintings. The term is appropriate for revealing the characteristics of paintings in Korean old society, which was a class society. According to creation method and taste, paintings in the Joseon Dynasty can be classified into court paintings, literati paintings and folk paintings. Folk paintings occupy a part in the classification system. In those days, folk paintings were called ‘common paintings’ but the term ‘common painting’ is an inappropriate concept implying deprecation. However, if the scope of folk paintings is considered to include court paintings, there arise several problems. First, in the aspect of demand, it is extended to common people and literati, and the formative world shows the taste specific to folk paintings. That is, folk paintings are drawn by common people, and reflect their taste. However, they were demanded not only by common people but also by literati. Court paintings, literati paintings and folk paintings are distinguished from one another by the consumer classes, but still they are closely interconnected and form a network in terms of theme and painting style. Folk paintings are influenced by colorful and fortune‐seeking court paintings but at the same time are closely connected to literati paintings drawn with Indian ink and light color for appreciation. However, this does not mean that folk paintings are simple imitations of court paintings or literati paintings. Folk paintings use the themes of court paintings or literati paintings but they display a formative world of a new sense through simplification and schematization, and please the viewers through satirical interpretations. Furthermore, influenced by the Indian ink painting technique of literati paintings, folk paintings sometimes bear a serene atmosphere. Despite such influence of literati paintings, the substantial acceptability and interpretability specific to folk paintings demand us to reevaluate folk paintings today.
