Abstract
This essay is a result of study on the iconographic origin of two bodhisattvas located in the front of main hall of Seokguram(石窟庵). These two bodhisattvas are interpreted as Manjusri and Samantabhadra because the main image of Seokguram is regarded as Sakyamuni buddha which is based on the image in Mahabodhi shrine on Bodhgaya, India. But it is difficult to find any doctrinal evidence that Sakyamuni is flanked by Manjusri and Samantabhadra. Further, it is more difficult to confirm the iconographic reference that Manjusri and Samantabhadra distinguished by tea bawl and sutra booklet. If Manjusri and Samantabhadra ride on lion and elephant, it is easy to define. We can find out that these bodhisattva’s iconography of riding lion and elephant are based on Dharani Collection Sutra, and this was known to the designers of Seokguram because this sutra was translated before about one hundred years ago from Seokguram. The first made example of Manjusri and Samantabhadra with lion and elephant can be found at the relief door leaf on stone Sarira stupa in Chengwu xian(城,武縣) Shandong sheng(山東省), dated the year of 725. Inspite of these type of bodhisattva were already known to the United Shilla at that age, these were not applied for iconography of Seokguram because of the possibility of which were not a regular symbol image of two bodhisattvas or intended to be based on the other doctrinal text which is distinguished from Dharani Collection Sutra. If the image of two bodhisattva in Seokguram were based on the precedent iconography, similar images have to be found at the former periods. But no example can be found at least until now. Even the similar bodhisattva images with tea bawl and sutra booklet as Seokguram can be found in Dunhwang Mogaoku and Luoyang Longmen caves, there is no evidence that they means Manjusri or Samantabhadra. It shows that the bodhisattva images with these symbols were already exist in China, but applying it to Manjusri and Samantabhadra iconography was inventional idea from the designers of Seokguram. This essay tried to contemplate the reason of relationship between tea bawl, stura booklet and Manjusri and Samantabhadra. The tea bawl can be concerned with the meeting of monk Wuzhuo and Manjusri which described in Song Gaoseng chuan(宋高僧傳) while sutra booklet connected to Samantabhadra image of Nanshansi(南禪寺) in Wutaishan(五台山). According to these connection, the tea bawl can be interpreted as Samādhi(dhyāna, 定) while sutra booklet may means Prajñā(literary learning, 慧). Further more, it could be meaning the contrast with ultimate invisible enlightenment and practical asceticism.
