Abstract
Cave #285 of the Magao Caves, which is a grotto cut in Year 538 and 539 of the Western Wei Dynasty, is drawing people’s attention as it has a mural on its west wall that is related to early esoteric Buddhism. On the west wall were deployed various Hindi guardian deities centering on the main image including the sun and moon gods on the top, Mahyesuracheon, Narayeoncheon, Kumaracheon, and Binagayacheon. Among them, Mahyesuracheon is Shiva, one of the three greatest deities in Hinduism and appeared for the first time in the Yungang Grottoes in the 2nd half of the 5th century. As it was excavated from 6th‐7th‐century temple sites in the Hotan area, it is believed to have been a very popular guardian deity revered by contemporary people. Mahyesuracheon was worshipped not only in Buddhism but also in Zoroastrianism as god of wind Veshparkar. Such a transmission of a Hindi deity to other religions is related to religious practices during the period of the Kushan Dynasty in the 2nd‐3rd centuries, and the spread of Mahyesuracheon involved the Sogdian people who held commercial power in Central Asia. The origin of the icon of Mahyesuracheon in Cave #285 of the Magao Caves is ‘Oesho’ inscribed in coins during the reign of King Kanishka, and ‘Oesho’ borrowed the icon of Shiva, which was worshipped as Mahyesuracheon in Buddhism and as god of wind Veshparkar in Zoroastrianism. God of wind ‘Oado’ with a wind belt on the head of Mahyesuracheon in Cave #285 is believed to be one of cases explaining the relationship among Hindi Shiva, Buddhist Mahyesuracheon, and Zoroastrian god of wind.
