Abstract
This study examines the characteristics of the Amitabha Hanging Painting of Bongguk-sa Temple in Seoul, created in 1892 by Geumgokdang Yeonghwan, a leading painter-monk in the Seoul-Gyeonggi region, in the 19th-century. The results of this study reveal that, first, an inscription on the verso indicates that the Hanging Buddhist painting was created in 1892, corresponding to the third period of the late Joseon Dynasty. In addition, it was revealed that 34 people, including five court ladies, including family names Ha (河氏淨德惠), Gong (孔氏光明花), Jeong (鄭氏白蓮花), Lee (戊戌生李氏), and Baek (丁酉生白氏), participated in the donation and made a wish to pray for the safety and longevity of the royal family. They also performed the eye-opening of one hanging Buddhist painting, two Buddhist paintings on the upper part, two paintings of Avalokitesvara, and one painting of the guardian deity, and gilded one statue of Avalokitesvara and two statues of Amitabha Buddha, which were enshrined at the Bongguk-sa temple on Samgak-san Mountain. Second, the Bongguk-sa Temple painting of Amitabha Buddha was certified by the 'Yeoneungdang Geonhaeng,' confirming its creation under the supervision of head painter-monk 'Geumgokdang Yeonghwan' and editor 'Hanbongdang Changyeop.' Yeonghwan was a Buddhist painter-monk who left behind outstanding works of art in the 19th century. He not only interacted extensively with many other painter-monks of the time, but also worked extensively in Namyangju, Anseong, Paju, Ganghwa regions and even the present-day Seoul area, demonstrating his wide-ranging activities. Thus, we can confirm that this masterpiece was created in collaboration with the most renowned painter-monks, who were active and renowned in the Seoul and Gyeonggi regions, and it is significant in that it provides insight into the adoption and transformation of styles in light of the historical context through interactions with various painter-monks. Third, the Amitabha Hanging Painting of Bongguk-sa Temple exhibits the color and expressive techniques that typically appeared in the late 19th century. The Buddha and Bodhisattva statues possess robust yet elegant forms, supple brushwork, and elaborate designs adorned with expensive materials like gold leaf and gold teeth. Therefore, it is a masterpiece that embodies the elegance and refinement of a Buddhist painting originating from the royal family. By examining the background and iconographic characteristics of the royally commissioned hanging Buddhist painting created by the painter-monk Yeonghwan, as well as its various stylistic features, this study is significant in that it seeks to clarify the art-historical position of the Amitabha Hanging Painting at Bongguk-sa Temple.
