Abstract
The Shakyamuni Triad Buddha Statue in Shinheungsa temple is highly regarded as a precious Buddha Statue created by painter monk Seungho in 1682. First, Shinheungsa temple is recorded in the construction chronicle as having existed before 1657 when the Mahavira Hall was founded, and is is believed to have been constructed around 1657. Second, the iconographic characteristics of the Shakyamuni Triad Statues are neat yet somewhat lumpy‐heavy‐weight, and the upper body is short and the lower body is tall and wide, showing iconographic characteristics, which is evaluated as the representative Buddha Statue of Seungho sculpture sect. Third, as this Shakyamuni Triad Buddha Statues were created in 1682 as stone Buddha Statues, although the style characteristics of the late 17th century, the first period of the late Joseon period, are appearing here, it was revealed that they exhibit some rigidity as they are stone sculptures. Fourth, the head sculpture monk Seungho, who created these Shakyamuni Triad Statues, is the greatest master of Stone Buddha statue creation, and he created in his heyday these Shakyamuni Triad Buddha Statues at Shinheungsa temple, and so therefore among Seungho's Stone Buddha statues, these can be evaluated as his representative work. Fifth, the fact that they are the format of Shakyamuni ‐ Maitreya ‐ Jehwagalla’s Sugi(授記) Triad Buddha Statues should be considered important in the study of iconography.
