Abstract
This paper estimates trade openness using industry-level gravity model derived from trade theory on differentiated products. The data for 60 countries which include bilateral export and import in 28 industries during the period from 1976 to 2000 are used in the analysis. The results show that openness to trade is different each other among countries. According to the results for Korea's bilateral openness, Korea's import openness is higher in trade with advanced countries than with developing countries, and Korea is more open to Japan than to the U.S. As the estimated openness is based on trade in manufactures, the results should be interpreted with caution in explaining openness of the countries whose major exports are primary commodities. However, this kind of openness is thought to show differences of trade policies among countries, since it was estimated after controlling for economic factors that influence the volume of trade.
