최근 한국의 대졸자 임금 프리미엄은 상승 추세를 보이고 있다. 이는 1990년대 중반까지의 하락 추세와는 대조적이며 대졸자 공급이 꾸준히 증가하고 있다는 점을 감안하면 의외의 결과이다. 대졸자 임금 프리미엄의 상승 추세는 흔히 숙련편향적(skill-biased) 기술진보에 기인하는 것으로 설명된다. 본 논문은 최근에 급증한 대중국 수출에서 또 다른 원인을 찾을 수 있다고 보고 통상적인 임금 방정식에 산업별 대중국 수출량을 설명변수로 추가하여 학력 더미와의 교차항에 대한 계수를 추정한다. 분석 결과, 대졸자 임금 프리미엄은 산업별로 차이가 있으며 대중국 수출량이 큰 산업에서 더 높은 것으로 나타났다. 이 결과는 숙련편향적 기술진보와 보완적으로 작용하여 최근의 대졸자 임금 프리미엄 상승 추세를 설명한다.
Abstract
College wage premium has been rising recently in Korea, which contrasts with the downward trend until the mid-1990s. This is surprising because the supply of college graduates in Korea exhibits steady growth. A popular explanation is found in the skill-biased technological progress. This paper offers an alternative explanation that the recent growth in Korea's exports to China is associated with the increase in the college premium. We estimate the standard Mincerian wage equation with added terms of exports to China by industry. The interaction of this added variable with individual college dummy is found to be statistically significant and positive. This finding suggest that the recent increase in the college premium in Korea is explained by the rapid growth in Korea's exports to China, which complements the explanation by skill-biased technological progress.
