Abstract
The theory of growth implies that technology-convergence precedes income-convergence. However, neoclassical theory and new growth theory have different views about the properties of the cross-country diffusion and convergence of technology. Using the test method proposed by Phillips and Sul (2007), this study examines whether cross-country data of TFP over the period of 1970~2010 is consistency with the cross-country convergence of technology. No evidence in favor of the world-wide convergence of technology is found, whereas evidence of convergence is found for OECD countries and 17 industrialized countries. The study also examines club convergence based on the notion that technological diffusion is not global, and it identifies two major technology-convergence clubs. The result indicates that technology has stronger tendency for convergence than income, which is consistent with the notion that technology-convergence precedes income-convergence.
