본 논문은 2006-2017년 우리나라 제조업 데이터를 사용하여 외국인직접투자(FDI)의 생산성파급효과를 국내기업의 특성과 투자 원천국 특성을 고려하여 분석한다. 전체 FDI를 대상으로보면 부정적인 동일산업 내 수평적 파급효과와 긍정적인 연관산업 간 수직적 파급효과가나타났다. 국내기업 특성 중 수출지향성 정도는 생산성 파급효과에 영향이 없지만, 기존 생산성수준이 높은 기업만을 따로 보면 파급효과 정도는 더욱 커진다. FDI를 원천국별로 구분하여분석한 결과 일본과 영국발 FDI의 경우 전체 FDI를 대상으로 분석한 결과와 같으나, 미국발FDI의 경우 반대로 긍정적인 수평적 파급효과와 부정적인 수직적 파급효과가 나타났다. 미국발FDI기업은 상대적으로 한국내 현지기업에서 중간재를 조달하기보다는 본국의 모기업과의거래가 많기 때문인것으로 파악된다. 또한 기술 흡수능력이 높은 국내기업들은 그렇지 않은기업들에 비해 FDI 생산성 파급효과가 증가함을 알수있다. 이와 같이 FDI의 생산성 파급효과가투자 원천국이나 국내기업의 특성에 따라 다르다는 결과는 FDI 유치정책을 수립하는데 중요한정책적 시사점을 제공한다.
Abstract
This study uses firm-level data from 2007 to 2017 to analyze whether domestic firms'characteristics and FDI source countries affect the degree of FDI spillover effects in Korea.Regression results from the whole sample present negative intra-industry horizontal andpositive inter-industry vertical spillover effects, similar to previous studies. Consideration ofdomestic firms' characteristics reveals that domestic firms' export-orientedness does notaffect the spillover effects, while domestic firms' productivity matters for the FDI spillovereffects. In particular, domestic firms with higher productivity shows more positive verticalFDI spillover effects. Spillover effects from Japan and U.K FDI firms present a consistentsign with the whole sample results, while the US FDI shows positive horizontal and negativevertical spillover effects. US FDI firms have more intra-firm transactions with the parentcompany, which generates weaker vertical spillover effects. Absorption capacity plays a rolein capturing the positive spillover effects. In conclusion, it is important to consider sourcecountries and domestic firms' characteristics when establishing FDI related policies.
