중국 제조업 기업의 수출과 생산성 관계 실증분석

본 연구에서는 생산성이 높은 기업은 수출시장에 진입하여 이윤을 추구한다는 Melitz(2003) 이론이 바탕이 된 자기선택가설과 기업들이 수출하는 과정에서 학습효과가 발생하고 그에 따라 생산성이 상승한다는 학습효과가설에 대해 중국의 기업수준 미시적 데이터를 이용하여 회귀분석을 실시하고 검증하였다. 수출변수로는 매출액 대비 수출비율, 수출여부 더미변수 등을 사용하였으며 생산성을 위한 변수로는 DEA 방법에 의해 계산된 ‘상대적 효율성’(EF)과 ‘생산성 변화’를 나타내는 MPI지수를 사용하였다. 1998년~2013년 중국 ‘공업기업데이터베이스’의 기업수준 데이터를 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 기업들 사이의 상대적 효율성과 수출비율 사이에 음(-)의 관계를 발견하였다. 이는 기존의 중국 연구들에서의 결과와 유사하며 ‘생산성과 수출 사이의 역설’ 현상을 보여준다. 둘째, 기업들의 전년대비 생산성 변화 지수를 분석한 결과, 수출은 생산성에 양(+)의 방향으로 영향을 미치며, 생산성도 수출에 양(+)의 방향으로 영향을 미친다는 것을 발견하였다. 결국, 본 연구에서는 일견 모순적으로 보이는 ‘생산성과 수출의 역설’에서의 두 변수 사이의 음(-)의 관계와 자기선택가설이나 학습효과가설에서 보여지는 두 변수 사이의 양(+)의 관계를 모두 명시적으로 설명할 수 있었다. 즉, ‘역설’은 기업 사이의 상대적 효율성 지수를 이용하여 설명할 수 있었으며, 수출과 생산성 사이의 양의 관계는 기업들의 생산성변화 지수를 이용하여 설명할 수 있었다.

Abstract

This study explores the relationship between the productivity and exports in the Chinese manufacturing firms focusing on two aspects. First, we deal with the negative relationship between two variables, which is called as ‘the paradox between productivity and the exports’ in the existing literature. Second, we investigate ‘self-selection hypothesis’ and ‘learning effects hypothesis’ that occur in the exporting process of Chinese firms, which produce positive relationship between the two variables. We compiled and analyzed nearly 4.5 million firm-level data of China's manufacturing industry and calculated two indices by using DEA method. They are the 'relative efficiency(EF)' among the firms and the MPI index indicating the change in productivity, in order to solve the apparently contradicting relationship. The following results are obtained from the panel regression analysis by using data from 1998 to 2013. First, when we use the ‘relative efficiency’, the negative (-) relationship between the efficiency and export ratio was found. Second, when we use MPI index, which is the productivity change index, we found the positive relationship between two variables; the productivity have positive effects on the exports, and the exports also have the positive effects on the productivity. Last, a Granger causality test was conducted to confirm that productivity and exports affect each other in the direction of positive interaction. These results would explain the 'paradox between productivity and exports'.
