이 논문은 1988~2007년 간 한국의 상장기업 자료를 사용하여 위기 전과 후에 있어서 재벌과 노동조합이 이윤율에 미친 영향을 분석함으로써 위기 후 구조조정이 성과를 거두었는지를 분석한다. 위기 전에는 재벌기업과 노동조합이 있는 기업의 이윤율이 낮았다. 그리고 기존 재무상태가 불건전한 경우에도 재벌기업과 노동조합이 있는 기업의 이윤율이 낮았다. 이것은 연성예산제약 하에서 재벌과 노동조합이 금융 부실을 가져왔고, 따라서 위기에 책임이 있었다는 것을 의미한다. 위기 후에는 재벌기업의 이윤율이 높고, 노동조합이 있는 기업의 이윤율이 낮지 않다. 기존 재무상태가 불건전한 기업의 경우 재벌기업의 이윤율이 낮지 않고, 노동조합이 있는 기업이 이윤율이 오히려 높다. 이것은 위기 후 예산제약이 경성화함에 따라 재벌과 노동조합이 금융 부실과 위기에 책임이 있는 위기 전의 구도가 청산되었다는 것을 의미한다. 따라서 위기 후 구조조정은 나름 대로 성과를 거두었다고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper investigates the performance of the structural adjustment after the 1997 crisis, by analyzing the effect of chaebol-affiliation and unionization on firm profitability using the data of listed firms from 1988 to 2007. Before the crisis, chaebol-affiliated firms and unionized firms had lower profitability among the financially unsound firms as well as all firms. This means that chaebol and unions were responsible for the crisis by creating nonperforming loans under the soft budget constraints. After the crisis, chaebol-affiliated firms have higher profitability and unionized firms do not have lower profitability. Among the financially unsound firms, chaebol-affiliated firms do not have lower profitability and unionized firms have higher profitability. This means that the pre-crisis structure that chaebol and unions were creating nonperforming loans has been purged after the crisis. The structural adjustment after the crisis can thus be regarded as a success.
