Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of labor unions on the financial performance of corporate restructuring. This provides additional evidence that restructuring related research in the field of accounting has been insignificant in recent years, and empirical analysis that reflects social phenomena related to restructuring in the first half of 2016. This study empirically analyzes firms listed on the Korea Exchange for the period 1998-2013 by using regression analysis of least squares. The results of this study are as follows. First, Hypothesis 1 shows that unions have a negative impact on their financial performance compared to non-unions firms in the restructuring period. Second, Hypothesis 2 shows that the participation rate of union members has a negative effect on financial performance during restructuring period. The results of this study suggest that during the restructuring period, the unions of the enterprises cause the inhibition of the efficient workforce composition and negatively affect the financial performance of the enterprises. This is because the higher the proportion of the labor union members, It is confirmed that employment is operated in an inelastic manner and can have a negative impact on financial performance. The results of this study show that the financial performance of the restructuring firm is the most important factor not only the management's efforts during the restructuring period but also the cooperation of the workers, In addition, it suggests that the information of the corporate information to the users of accounting information can be considered not only the information of the quantitative related financial statements but also the qualitative information such as the role of the union as a stakeholder-oriented governance structure.
