Abstract

This study explores how sleep time varies between Korea and other countries(Denmark, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Slovenia, South Africa, Italy, Germany, Norway, and Spain) using Multinational Time Use Study(MTUS) data. The study found that Korean people sleep the least or the second from the least in all life stages(youth, adulthood, and later life) among the ten countries, and the difference was the largest among the youth and married women who are employed. By applying the life balance triangle model which identifies the patterns of time use in terms of the balance between time constraints and freedom of choice, the study also illustrated that the lack of sleep for Korean people is associated with the lack of balance in overall time use, which comes from social constraints such as long working/commuting time, long study hours, and gender inequality in household labour.
