Abstract

This study describes gender difference in sleep time in Korea. This also explores covariates of sleep time in everyday life. For this study we employ the 2004 time-use survey data which was conducted by Statistics Korea. Time diary for those aged 20 and more was analyzed to discern the gender difference in sleep time. Sleep is usually assumed as one of biological phenomena for human beings, taking much time as an individual activity in daily lives. However, sleep is socially constructed in 27/7 society where sleep is often constrained to meet the demands of everyday life. Thus, sleep is regarded as one of the socially constructed in this study. With this new perspective, we can expect gender difference in sleep time because of different treatment of gender in the labor market and traditional gender role which is overburdened for females in Korean society. This results in unequal time of sleep in Korea. Testing hypotheses, we find that sleep time is not equal by gender. Unlike many Western societies where males have less sleep time than females, females are likely to sleep less than males in Korea. This is a very significant finding in sleep study, which requires further investigation and analysis beyond gender difference in sleep time.
