Abstract
This paper is written to examine the course of restoring the honors of King Danjong and his loyal subjects. The paper also would aim to study the restoration of ruins and making records connected with King Danjong and his loyal subjects. I especially focus on the production period and the meaning of Woljung-do. King Sukjong had restored the honors of King Danjong and his loyal subjects, King Yeongjo and King Jeongjo had restored ruins and made records connected with King Danjong and his royal subjects. These kings’ commemorative projects on King Danjong in 18th century based on King Sejo’s comment and action. Even if King Sejo was the very person who had killed King Danjong, Sejo did acknowledge Sayuksin, the six subjects dying for King Danjong, would become loyal subject. So the 18th century kings’ commemorative projects were for betraying King Sejo’s saintly virtues. The 18th kings had appreciated King Danjong’s loyal subjects to ask their subjects loyalty. King Jeongjo’s commemorative project in 1791 was specially connected with restoring the honors of Crown Prince Sado. Jeongjo had ordered to search the records about King Danjong’s loyal subjects on the way to visit Crown Prince Sado’s tomb, it was concluded to built the altar for the loyal subjects close to King Danjong’s tomb. At that time, King Jeongjo was planning to restore the honors of Crown Prince Sado. 1791 is the important year to make records about the restoration of ruins connected with King Danjong. It’s because Jangneongsabo was started to compile and the painting Jagyulu-do and Woljung-do were made in that year. I pay attention to Yeongwol governor Pak Gi-jeong on the point to restore ruins and make records connected with King Danjong. He was the descendant of Pak Paeng-nyeon who was the only person having son among Sayuksin. Pak Gi-jeong had participated in the first memorial ceremony for King Danjong’s loyal subjects and had restored ruins connected with King Danjong with all his hearts. He also had repaired or constructed the buildings and ruins appeared in Jagyulu-do and Woljung-do and he had copy-edited Jangneongsabo in obedience to King Jeongjo’s order. I think Woljung-do is the painting showing King Jeongjo and Pak Gi-jeong’s willingness to leave on record of the 18th kings’ commemorative projects on King Danjong.
