Abstract
This paper examines the economic activities of the Hamyang Park clan, a traditional yangban landlord family based in Gagok-ri, Eunsan-myeon, Buyeo-gun, during the 20th century. It focuses on economic activities beyond their primary occupation of farming management. The objective is to identify the socio- economic changes experienced by a traditional yangban landlord family encountering modernity, including its colonial aspects. The findings indicate that the Hamyang Park clan actively engaged with colonial modernity from a very early period to pursue socio-economic growth. This included investment in and management participation with Eunsan Heungsan Trading Company, disputes related to the purchase of a Singer sewing machine, and large-scale financial transactions with the state-run bank under the Japanese colonial rule and Korean national banks. Immediately after liberation, the family constructed a rice mill and entered the rice milling business. This can be seen as an attempt to accumulate wealth by capitalizing on the period of rice shortages and skyrocketing rice prices.
