Abstract
This article is a case study of the Tongho-ri Daedonggye Munjeo (1901~2015), a document passed down in Tongho-ri, Haenam-gun, South Jeolla Province. It explores the factors contributing to the long-term sustainability of the Tongho-ri Daedonggye (Village Association), which was established in the late Joseon Dynasty and has continued into the 21st century. In particular, it focuses on the relationship between the Dangje (rite for the village deity, 堂祭) and the Daedonggye as well as the village fishing ground and the fishing village association through an analysis of the income and expenditure records of the Tongho-ri Daedonggye. In the 1910s, the Tongho-ri Daedonggye prepared ceremonial items such as a sedan chair, official’s robe, and sunshade, which were lent to residents for special occasions. Residents paid rental fees to the Daedonggye for using these shared items. In the 1960s, the village fishing grounds were incorporated into the village’s shared resources following the establishment of the Tongho-ri Fishing Community in 1962, which began operating in these waters. The Fishing Community paid a fee known as ppeolse (a tax on the use of local mudflats, 뻘세) to the Daedonggye, and this fee became one of its main sources of income. By the 1970s, the scope of shared resources in Tongho-ri expanded further to include village land and a warehouse built on buldeung. These communal resources—including ceremonial items, fishing grounds, land, and the warehouse—were all managed by the Daedonggye. The most important ceremony held by the Tongho-ri Daedonggye was the Dangje. This ritual has been continuously observed from 1904 to 2015, as evidenced by the income and expenditure records of the Daedonggye. These records highlight the role of the Daedonggye in supporting village life—not only by lending shared ceremonial items for residents’ convenience but also by fostering a spirit of reciprocity and cooperation through the annual hosting of the Dangje. Moreover, the Daedonggye played a central role in ensuring the long-term sustainability of the village community by continuously developing and managing various shared resources according to the needs of each period.
