한국 TV드라마에서 ‘바다’는 낭만적 로맨스를 이루기 적절한 공간적 장치로 자주 활용되었다. 로맨스 드라마에서 ‘바다’는 종종 도시와 다른 어떤 곳, 일상에서 벗어난 곳, 긴장을 풀고여유를 가질 수 있는 곳으로, 낯선 환경이나 만남에 대한 낭만적 기대가 충족되는 판타지적 공간으로 재현되었다. ‘바다’는 로맨스 드라마에서 낭만적 이미지를 그리는 데 여전히 유효하지만, 단지 전략적 배경으로만 활용되는 것은 아니다. ‘바다’와 로맨스는 상처와 결핍을 지닌 인물이 일상을 떠나 ‘바다’와 연결되어있는 상대를 만나 자신의 어둠의 깊이를 발견하는 서사가중심을 이루고 있다. 또한 ‘바다’를 배경으로 주요 이야기가 펼쳐지는 로맨스 드라마에서는 도시와 섬, 서울과 지역사회의 공동체 간의 문제로 시선을 확장 시키는 시도도 하고 있다. 최근로맨스 드라마는 ‘바다’를 중심으로 생활하는 사람들의 다양한 이야기를 담아냄으로써, 또 다른 로맨스를 꿈꾸고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 이 글은 최근 로맨스 드라마에서 시도하고 있는 바다에대한 감각과 이미지 활용을 두 편의 드라마 <톱스타 유백이>, <갯마을 차차차>를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 두 편의 드라마는 상처와 결핍을 지닌 인물이 일상을 떠나 바다와 연결된 상대를 만나 자신의 상처를 치유하고 회복하는 작품이다. <톱스타 유백이>는 유백이 과거의 상처를 섬 여즉도에서 만난 강순을 통해 치유 받고 성장하는 로맨스를 다루고 있다. 서울에서 온 치과의사 혜진과 어촌 마을 공진이 고향이자 삶의 터전인 두식과의 로맨스를 그린 <갯마을 차차차>는 두 사람의 로맨스뿐 아니라 바다를 중심으로 생활하는 사람들과의 관계를 다양하게 제시하고 있다. 여기서 바다는 단지 낭만적 사랑에 대한 판타지를 그려내는 배경에 그치지 않고, 로맨스의 주인공과 그들을 둘러싼 사람들 간의 관계성을 촘촘하게 드러내는 특수한 공간이 된다. 이후 TV 드라마가 바다와 결합되는 방식은 로맨스 서사의 관습에 갇힌 낭만적 이미지를 생산하기 위한활용이 아닌, 좀 더 다양한 의미 안에서 활용되고 해석될 것이다.
Abstract
Korean TV drama frequently use the ‘sea’ as an appropriate spatial device for romance. In romantic TV drama, “sea” is often reproduced as a fantasy space that meets the viewer’s romantic expectations about unfamiliar environments or encounters, where one can relax outside the city and the daily routine. The “sea” is still valid as a romantic image in TV drama, but it is no longer used merely as a strategic background. The “sea” and romance serve as the center of a narrative in which a character with certain deficiencies leaves behind daily life and meets a figure related to the sea, and then discovers the depths of darkness. In addition, recent romantic TV drama set against an ocean background have tried to extend the perspective from individual conflicts to conflicts between a city and an island, and between Seoul, the capital city, and a local community. Some recent romantic TV drama appear to depict another form of romance by capturing the varied stories of people who live near the sea. This paper examines the use of sense and images of the sea attempted in recent TV drama, with the focus on the two drama, Top Star Yoo Baek and Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, in particular. In both drama, a figure with deficiencies leaves behind his daily life, meets a partner connected to the sea, and heals himself. Top Star Yoo Baek depicts a romance in which Yoo Baek heals his trauma and grows with the help of Kang Soon, whom he meets on Yeojeogdo Island. Meanwhile, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha not only depicts a romance between dentist Hye-jin from Seoul and Doo-sik, who was born and raised in Gongjin, a fishing village, but also presents the relationships of people living near the sea. Here, the sea is more than just a background to a romantic fantasy of love, and becomes a special place that reveals the relationships between the main characters and the people surrounding them. In the future, TV drama might involve the sea not so as to produce images trapped in conventional romantic narratives, but in order to interpret the sea in a more diverse sense.
