Abstract
This study examines the memory frame through which the media memorializes the death of a soldier through the cases of Cheonan incident that occurred by a North Korea submarine attack. The subjects of this study are memorial articles in the Donga Ilbo and the JoongAng Ilbo which dealt with the death of 46 sailors killed by the Cheonan incident in March 2013. The study method is a qualitative discourse analysis on the contents of memorials of these two newspapers. According to the results of the study, the death characteristics of Cheonan sailors were emphasized by a memory frame on the individual dimension such as family affection, humanity, positive attitude in life, personal talent, and future dream. At the organization level, job ethics and professionalism were emphasized. At the social level, the memory frame for social service and commitment was emphasized. This study discusses the implications of the death characteristics of soldiers memorized by the media from a macro and micro perspective.
