Abstract
This study investigates the thematic evolution of discourse on military mental force enhancement by applying text frequency analysis and Structural Topic Modeling (STM) to a large corpus of opinion articles. Drawing from 10,738 articles published in The Korea Defense Daily between 2001 and March 2025, the research identifies a targeted subset of 3,928 articles containing keywords such as “spirit,” “mental force,” “intangible force,” and “barracks life.” By incorporating the publication timelines of the official Military Mental Force Manual as a metadata covariate, the study captures long-term trends and variations in narrative emphasis within military public discourse. Initial text frequency analysis reveals that the nouns “training,” “education,” and “unit” consistently appear as dominant terms across all examined periods, underscoring the persistent institutional focus on preparation, pedagogy, and organizational cohesion. Notably, references to “combat” begin to rise significantly after 2008, with the term “war” showing marked growth post-2017. Meanwhile, mentions of “North Korea” begin to decline sharply around 2014. These lexical shifts suggest evolving security narratives and changing doctrinal priorities within the military information environment. The STM analysis identifies five primary thematic clusters—‘view of military life,’ ‘mission performance,’ ‘unit education,’ ‘patriotism,’ and ‘family’— each of which shows varying degrees of prominence across six distinct time periods. The topic of ‘family,’ previously dominant in early periods, has steadily diminished over time, while the theme of ‘mission performance’ has shown continuous growth since 2000. ‘Unit education’ has remained a consistently salient topic, particularly after 2013, whereas ‘accident prevention’ showed a temporary spike around 2019 before declining again. These patterns reflect the dynamic interplay between institutional narratives and the broader sociopolitical environment, with discourse adjusting in response to internal and external events. Expanding upon a 2020 predecessor study, this research extends the analytical framework by enlarging the dataset, refining temporal granularity, and integrating policy-relevant metadata. Although exploratory in scope, the study provides an empirical foundation for understanding the long-term evolution of military mental force discourse. Furthermore, the findings offer valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and strategic communicators seeking to align mental power doctrine with the needs and perceptions of a modern military force.
