초록
Seaweed is rich in nutrients such as dietary fiber, amino acids, and minerals and it is consumed in various Asian countries, including South Korea. Recently, seaweed has been utilized as a raw material for products such as health supplements for pets, cosmetics, and eco-friendly health foods. However, research on seaweed, being marine-based, is relatively limited compared to terrestrial plants. This study evaluated the potential of Sargassum yezoense (S. yezoense), belonging to the Sargassaceae family of brown algae, extracted using distilled water (SYW) and 70% ethanol (SYE), as a cosmetic ingredient. Antioxidant effect of SYE was higher than that of SYW. Through the paper disc diffusion assay, the antibacterial effects against C. acnes, S. epidermidis, S. aureus, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa were evaluated. In all strains, the antibacterial effect of SYE was higher than SYW. Both extracts showed a cell viability of more than 80% at 50 μg/ml in RAW 264.7 cells, and NO production was significantly reduced by SYE compared to SYW in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells. Furthermore, protein and mRNA expression of iNOS and COX-2 were significantly reduced by SYE compared to SYW in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells. SYE inhibited the activation of NFκB and JAK/STAT signaling pathways. Based on these results, it suggests that SYE has more applicability as a cosmetic material than SYW.
