초록

This study confirmed the effectiveness of natural products extracted from the marine plant Eisenia bicyclis (Kjellman) Stechell 1905 as functional cosmetic materials. The wrinkle-straightening, whitening, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial effects were ascertained using boiling water (EBW) and 70% EtOH (EB70E) extracts of E. bicyclis. EBW and EB70E demonstrated excellent antioxidant activities. However, neither showed any significant whitening, wrinkle improvement, and anti-microbial effects. In addition, the anti-microbial activity against four bacterial species, S. epidermidis, S. aureus, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa, was insignificant. The anti-inflammatory effect was confirmed in RAW264.7 macrophages, which showed a survival rate of >80% at ≤800 µg/ml EB70E. However, EBW was toxic from 100 µg/ml onwards. Based on the cell viability results, the low-toxicity 800 µg/ml EB70E was used. It markedly suppressed the lipopolysaccharide-induced inhibition of nitric oxide production. In conclusion, since this study confirmed the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of E. bicyclis extract, we suggest its commercial value as a functional cosmetic material.
