군사사 연구에 관한 논의 -연구의 중요성과 연구방법론을 중심으로-

군사사는 오래전부터 군사전문가들에게 커다란 관심의 대상이었다. 그러나 학계에서 학문적으로 체계화된 것은 그리 오래되지 않았다. 군사사 연구가 활발해지기 시작한 것은 1913년 영국의 캠브리지 대학에서 군사사 과목이 처음 개설된 이후 두 차례의 세계대전을 겪으면서였다. 연구의 대상도 전쟁사뿐만 아니라 군사제도, 기술, 훈련, 군사사상 등으로 크게 확대되었다. 실천적인 입장에서 볼 때 군사사에 대한 올바른 인식과 군이 요구하는 작전적 수준의 지휘관을 양성하기 위한 교육은 가능한 조기에 시작되어야 효과를 볼 수 있다. 따라서 군의 초급 및 고급간부가 되려고 하는 인원들에게 각군 사관학교와 대학들은 군사사에 대한 튼튼한 기초를 만들어 주어야 하며, 그 지식적 기반을 제공할 수 있어야 한다. 그리고 장차 군에서 주요 지휘관이 되기 위한 중요한 요소 중 하나는 그들의 학교생활과 군 생활 기간 전체에 걸쳐 역사학 일반 및 군사사에 대한 지속적인 자기주도 학습이 이루어져야 하고 학습을 진행할 수 있는 교재가 마련되어야 한다. 그러나 전쟁사에 대한 무관심이 현재 장교 교육에 있어 가장 취약한 부분으로 대두되고 있다. 현재 역사에 대한 교육은 군사교육의 핵심이 아니라 부수적인 것으로 인식되고 있는 실정이기 때문이다. 그리고 군사사 교육에 있어 중요한 문제점 중의 하나는 고대나 중세에 수행되었던 전쟁에 대한 지식외에 현대의 전쟁에 대한 지식은 대단히 빈약하거나 아니면 거의 존재하지않는다는 것이다. 게다가 군사사 연구의 이론적 배경을 습득할 수 있는 변변한 교재도 없는 형편이다. 이는 미래의 고위급 지휘관과 참모들의 전 평시임무수행 능력 함양에 대단히 부정적인 결과를 초래하는 단초를 제공할 수도 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 군과 일반대학에서 군사사 연구의 중요성을 인지한 가운데 실질적인 연구방법론을 체득케 하는데 있으며, 군사사 연구의 불루오션적 관점을 주지시켜 군사사 연구에 대한 관심을 촉구, 연구를 활성화하기 위한 것이다.
Abstract
Military history has long been a huge object of interest for military history specialists. However, it has not been as long since the academic circles scientifically systemized this field. It was only when World Wars broke out after the first Military History course had been established at Cambridge University of Britain in 1913 that researches on military history began to be vigorous. Subjects of researches were so enlarged as to include not only military history but also military institution, technique, training, and military ideology. From a practical perspective, proper understanding of military history and the education of operational commanders should start early in their careers. Therefore, the Military Academies and colleges of each armed force should be able to provide those who intend to become junior and senior military officers with a solid intellectual foundation of military history. And one of the important factors to become operational commanders in the military is to continue self-leading learning of general and military history throughout their school and military career, and to prepare teaching materials to proceed with the learning. However, indifference to military history is regarded as the most vulnerable in the current education of officers. It is because the current education on history is perceived not as a core of military education but an appendix. And one of the important problems in education of military history is that, except for knowledge of ancient or medieval wars, knowledge of modern wars is either extremely meager or almost nonexistent. Moreover, there are no fairly decent teaching materials to learn theoretical backgrounds of military history researches. Such circumstances possibly seed a root that would cause seriously negative consequences in fostering a mission-implementation ability of future senior commanders and staff members in time of war and peace. The purpose of this research is to help acquire a theory of practical research method with recognition of the importance of military history researches in the military and general universities, and to inspire interests in military history researches and invigorate the studies by understanding the blue-ocean perspective of military history researches.
