Abstract

This study analyzes and discusses the creative aging program that emerged as one of the important topics of culture and art in the age of globalization from the perspective of integrated art therapy. In a narrow sense, creative aging is a cultural arts program for an aging population. The emphasis on the healing nature of arts is different from the existing cultural arts education programs. The subject of this study was the creative aging program of the Kairos Dance Theater in the United States, “The Dancing Heart” is a healing arts program for creative aging that demonstrated excellent improvement in quality of life for its participants. The Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC) theory was used as a framework of analysis to explain the possible neurological effects of the program. What can be derived by analyzing the healing character of this successful creative aging program is the activation and harmonization of a majority of ETC components and underlying neurological systems. The program produced significant changes in the cognitive element perhaps due to unique characteristics of the elderly. Such discussion about the healing implications of creative aging is expected to encourage greater application of theoretical systems and research in the discourse and practice of creative aging that will become necessary with the rapidly growing aging population.
