Abstract

This study is based on the translation and review of the literature of <Joseon Dance Artist Choi, Seung-hee>(朝鲜舞蹈家 崔承熙: edited by Go Ya-mun, Shanghai, China, Munoh Publishing, 1951), an early rare record about Choi, Seung-hee published in Chinese in Shanghai, China 1951. It is meaningful in that it examines Choi Seung-hee's appearance as described from China and the Chinese perspective, and further enriches the discussion on Choi, Seung-hee's historical position and cultural status at the time. ‘Joseon Dance Artist Choi, Seung-hee’ is a book that is considered meaningful piece of material for researchers related to Choi, Seung-hee, but the specific contents of the translated literature have never been introduced or covered. Accordingly, the researcher focused on Choi, Seung-hee's life history before their defection to North Korea in 1945, which is before the political aspects of the book become pronounced, and attempted to reveal a specific perspective on Choi, Seung-hee from that time by contrasting and comparing it with existing related literature and studies. This study reveals that Choi, Seung-hee's life before defecting to North Korea, highlighted in 'Joseon Dance Artist Choi Seung-hee', was the journey of a nationalist artist against the circumstantial Japanese cultural oppression, and of his status as a pioneer representing and creating oriental dance art encompassing Korea, China, and Japan.
