Abstract

Unlike John Calvin who firmly opposed the permission of sin, William Perkins, the most eminent English Reformed theologian of the late sixteenth century, defended the concept thoroughly. Perkins has made a great contribution to the acceptance of sin within the Reformed theology. This difference gives us the impression that Calvin and Perkins are theologically conflicting. But in more detail, the two have no difference in that sin is caused by the will of God. Perkins only stressed that the acceptance of sin is a special form of God’s will. To this end, Perkins made a detailed exegetical commentary and used the Scholasticism and Aristotelian philosophy, which was universally accepted at that time, more freely yet critically than ever before. As a result, Perkins deals with this topic in a much broader and more diverse way than Calvin. By using Scholastic distinctions such as the third will, the secret will and signifying will, the special will and the general will, Perkins emphasized God’s will for sin and at the same time removed God from his responsibility for sin. As such, Perkin’s theology is very loyal to the previous Reformed theological tradition. It is desirable to understand Perkin’s Reformed apologetics as a theological development, not a theological break with previous generations of the Reformation.
