Abstract

Science simulation has been noted as a kind of learning material to complement the experimental activity that is not often performed in the school. However, science simulations developed so far were not enough to provide the full range of actual inquiry experiences because natural phenomena in the real world were difficult to express with artificial animations. In particular, this kind of simulations were not sufficient to replace experimental activities because they limited students' observation experience. For this matter, the researchers expected that the science simulation would be educationally meaningful in observation guidance if they included video clips of actual experimental results. In this study, we developed a science simulation that emphasized 'observation' as an inquiry competency increasing only through actual experimental activities. Specifically, we focused on the design and development of the simulation that includes video clips showing the actual experimental results, with the topic of precipitation reactions covered in the middle school science curriculum. The simulation of precipitation reactions was developed through seminars with one expert of science education and three teachers. Then, we achieved the validity of the development through the expert evaluation of two experts of science education and four teachers who did not participate in the design seminars.
