Abstract

This study analyzd how pre-service elementary teachers perceive digital and hands-on science lessons after experiencing both types of instruction. To this end, 49 pre-service teachers participated in three inquiry-based activities from the elementary science curriculum—measuring the weight of objects, measuring temperature changes when two objects are in contact, and comparing the brightness of bulbs based on circuit connections—using both digital and hands-on experimental approaches. The digital experiments were conducted using simulations (JavaLab, PhET) and MBL sensors, while the hands-on experiments followed the procedures outlined in the textbooks. Data were collected through video recordings of team-based discussions and behaviors during the experiments, as well as open-ended surveys completed afterward. Using inductive content analysis, the data were interpreted to identify emerging patterns. The results showed that pre-service teachers positively perceived the efficiency, accuracy, and repeatability of digital experiments, while emphasizing the value of sensory experience, authenticity of inquiry, and student-centered engagement in hands-on experiments. In the preference survey, most participants favored hands-on experiments, while many also expressed the need for complementary use of both methods. These findings suggest that pre-service teachers view experiment-based lessons as strategic tools for fostering conceptual understanding and inquiry, indicating the need for hybrid instructional design strategies tailored to instructional goals and classroom contexts.
