(What is the future of Earth’s Climate?)

Abstract

The causes and effects of climate change are very complexly intertwined with scientific, social, and economic factors, and climate change progresses on temporal and spatial scales that are difficult for us to perceive easily. Scientists have expanded our understanding of climate change by using computer simulations as a key research tool and method. In the context of climate change education, computer simulations can also facilitate students' inquiry activities and enhance their understanding of the issue. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of scientific arguments in high school students' inquiry activities using climate change simulations. The climate change simulation module (What is the future of Earth's Climate?) provided by High-Adventure Science was reorganized and applied to the four lessons in accordance with the context of the first-year high school class in Korea. The results are largely summarized in two ways. First, when students made claims that were consistent with scientific consensus, the proportion of explanations based on simulation was high. Conversely, when the students' arguments were inconsistent with scientific consensus, there were many explanations without evidence or explanations based on non-scientific knowledge. Second, simulation-based explanations were found to be less than 50 % in all three argumentation tasks. Simulation-based explanations did not increase as the lesson progressed. The implications of these findings and ways to more effectively utilize climate change simulations were discussed.
