Abstract
Science places importance on the learning process of discovering or confirming concepts through experiments. However, due to difficulties in practical implementation, some concepts are not accompanied by experiments. The concepts of "impulse" and "impact mitigation system" in the integrated science curriculum are representative examples. This study explored a way to easily measure time-dependent impact force in school settings. To enable experimentation without expensive equipment, an Arduino microcontroller, a BMP390 barometric pressure sensor, and a balloon were used. Considering that force sensors are costly and pressure sensors require multiple units and complex control when the impact point is not fixed—and have low durability—a method was devised to measure the internal pressure of an air-filled object. When impact force is applied to the balloon, internal pressure changes occur. An experiment was designed to derive impact force from these internal pressure changes. Glass beads and plastic balls with equal mass were dropped from the same height onto a balloon, with thin Styrofoam attached to the impact point to deliver equal impulse. As a result, the collision durations were 90 ms for the glass bead and 200 ms for the plastic ball, and a time–force graph consistent with that presented in textbooks was obtained. The impulses calculated by integrating the generalized trendlines differed by only 0.23 %, experimentally confirming that the same impulse was applied to both objects. In addition, the concept that impulse remains constant but average force changes depending on collision duration, as described in textbooks, was clearly reproduced. The fact that both objects received the same amount of impulse during collision was used to evaluate the reliability of the barometric sensor-based measurement approach. To further verify this, a video analysis system was constructed to measure the velocities of the objects immediately before and after collision. The impulse calculated from these velocities showed differences of 0.38 % for the glass bead and 0.25 % for the plastic ball compared to the barometric sensor-based measurements. This confirmed that the balloon and the two objects experienced the same impulse during collision and that the barometric sensor-based approach reliably measured actual impulse.
