Abstract

This study aimed to develop an instructional program on infectious diseases that incorporates data analysis and to investigate its effects on high school students’ Knowledge Information Processing Competency and Positive Experiences about Science, as well as their perceptions of the program. The program was implemented with 32 second-year students enrolled in a Life Science I course at a general high school in Sejong Special Self-Governing City, with 16 students assigned to an experimental group and 16 to a control group. The experimental group participated in activity-based lessons centered on analyzing infectious disease data using data analysis tools. The program consisted of six sessions covering data collection, analysis, visualization, and the formulation of solutions. In contrast, the control group engaged in textbook-based research and model exploration activities without the use of data analysis tools. The results revealed statistically significant improvements in the experimental group’s Knowledge Information Processing Competency and Positive Experiences about Science. Specifically, all subdomains of Knowledge Information Processing Competency—problem/task recognition, solution exploration, and solution implementation and evaluation—showed significant gains. Similarly, significant improvements were observed in the subdomains of Positive Experiences about Science, including science learning emotion, science-related self-concept, motivation for learning science, and attitudes toward science, although no significant change was found in science-related career aspirations. These findings suggest that inquiry-based learning utilizing real-world infectious disease data analysis is effective in enhancing students’ competencies and attitudes toward science. The program holds potential for broader application in various educational contexts, including after-school programs, student clubs, and interdisciplinary project-based learning.
