Abstract

The purpose of this study is to suggest a baptism education plan by applying the methods and principles of teaching and learning of Christian education curriculum in Korean church education. For this purpose the researcher examined theoretically the meaning of baptism, the characteristic of baptism education, and the types of baptism education which have been carried out from the Early Church to the modern church. This study derived information for an analysis of baptism education through arranging the literature of baptism education, the type of baptism education, and the meaning of baptism. And this paper suggested the baptism education model and application plan of Korean church through the analysis of the church education and Christian church education curriculum. This study, in examining the meaning of baptism, approached newly by expanding the symbolic meaning of baptism and the spiritual meaning of baptism beyond the biblical meaning of baptism and the theological meaning of baptism in previous studies. The theoretical background of baptism education was systematically arranged by dividing the theoretical education, prayer education, spiritual discernment and church life education, and sharing practice education of the Early Church, and its conducted contents of the steps of evangelization, catechetical education, and entrance ceremony of three years of education. And this paper analyzed the limitations of the baptismal education of the modern church which was followed by the catechetical education centered on the medieval Reformed church. This study, by analyzing the fitness between the Christian church education curriculum on the meaning of baptism and the education of baptismal questions and answers, suggested a baptism education model and proposed its application plan. Baptism education should be carried out in the education of baptismal questions and answers including the meaning of baptism, and Christian education methods and principles to the proper unit should be applied with the principle of baptismal questions and answers method as a principle. And The baptismal education subject was suggested as a plan to expand education centered on baptism subject and education on church education of children, youth and adult. For the restoration of baptism education and the church growth, this study proposed to denominations and churches to form a network and to prepare a plan for the establishment of system to share baptism education program and professional educator. Therefore, this study is very valuable to understand correctly the continuity of baptism done with establishment of identity of baptism and baptism education, baptism ceremony and the Lord's Supper, and to contribute to the study of diversity in baptismal education.
