세례 예비자 교육에 대한 소고

본고는 초고속 성장을 지속하던 한국교회의 쇠퇴한 원인 가운데 하나가 세례 예비자 교육이 약화되었기 때문이라는 전제하에 세례 예비자에 대한 교육의 필요성을 제기하고 교육 과정과 내용을 제안하려는데 그 목적이 있다. 신약 성경에 세례 예비자에 대한 교육 과정과 내용이 구체적으로 제시되어 있지는 않았지만 복음이 전파되고, 듣는 자가 믿음으로 받아들이고, 회개가 수반 될 때 세례 성례전이 실시되었다는 것은 분명하다. 또한『Didache』와『사도전승』에 의하면 세례 예비자 교육이 3년간 엄격하게 실시되었고, 세례 예비자에 대한 교육은 수세자로 하여금 삶의 전환, 성숙한 그리스도인, 이단에 대한 대처 등을 위한 분명한 목적을 갖고 실시하였다. 역사적으로 볼 때 세례 예비자 교육이 약화된 시기는 유아 세례의 확대와 양적인 성장을 추구하는 시대였다. 종교개혁자들과 독일교회가 예비자 교육의 필요성을 인식하고 확대하였으나, 한국교회는 또다시 양적 성장을 추구하는 과정에서 세례 예비자 교육에 대한 양과 질을 현저하게 떨어뜨려 형식화 하고 있다. 세례 예비자에 대한 교육의 약화는 육에 속한 그리스도인을 양산하게 되고, 장기적으로 개인과 교회 공동체의 영적인 약화를 가져올 수 있다. 이런 현상은 비그리스도인들에게 기독교회에 대한 부정적인 이미지를 갖게 하고, 이는 한국교회 쇠퇴에 영향을 끼치고 있기 때문이다. 이러한 현실에서 세례 예비자 교육의 필요성을 성경과 초기 문헌을 중심으로 제기하고, 세례 예비자 교육 과정과 교육 내용을 이론과 실습으로 구분하여 다음과 같이 제시하였다. 첫째, 육체의 소욕을 십자가에 못 박고 성령의 인도하심에 순종하는 삶이 되도록 해야 한다. 둘째, 위의 것을 생각하고 찾는 삶이 되도록 해야 한다. 셋째, 지혜자의 언어생활이 되도록 해야 한다. 넷째, 이웃 사랑을 실천하는 삶이 되도록 해야 한다. 다섯째, 고난을 받아들이는 삶이 되도록 해야 한다. 여섯째, 전도자의 삶을 살도록 해야 한다. 일곱째, 분노를 다스리는 절제의 삶이 되도록 해야 한다. 본고를 통하여 한국교회 목회자와 그리스도인들이 세례에 대한 바른 의미를 인식함은 물론 세례 예비자 교육에 대한 필요성을 깨닫고, 세례 예비자에 대한 교육을 강화하는 기회가 되어 건강한 교회로 성장해 가기를 소망해 본다.
Abstract
This study is aimed to suggest the need for education of baptism candidates under the assumption that one of the reasons for decline of Korean church is weakened education of baptism candidates and to propose the curriculum and contents of such education. Although the curriculum and contents of the education for baptism candidates are not described in detail in New Testament, it is clear that the baptism sacraments were performed when the gospel is spread, and the listener receives it in faith along with repentance. In addition, according to『Didache』and『Apostolic Succession』, the education for baptism candidates was performed strictly for 3 years, which had clear purposes such as life transition of the baptized, mature christian and handling heresies. Historically the period in which the education of baptism candidates was weakened was the time when the quantitative expansion of infant baptism was sought for. Although the reformists and German church recognized and expanded the need for candidate education, Korean church remarkably lowered the quality and quantity of education of baptism candidates and fell into formalism while they were seeking for quantitative growth. The weakening of education of baptism candidates may produce massive christians who belong to the world and bring spiritual weakening among individuals and church communities in the long term. This phenomenon may have non-christians have negative images on church, which in turn may affect the decline of Korean church. In this situation, this study presents the need for baptism candidate education focusing on the Bible and the early literatures and divided the curriculum and contents of education of the baptism candidates into theory and practice to propose as follows: First, we have to crucify the desires of the nature and comply with the guidance of the Spirit. First, our life should think about and restore the above mentioned. Third, we have to say like a wise man. Fourth, we have to put neighbor loving into practice. Fifth, we have to accept the hardships. Sixth, we have to live a life like a evangelist. Seventh, we have to live moderate life controlling anger. It is hoped that this study may help Korean christians and pastors realize the true meaning of baptism as well as the need for education of baptism candidates and provide the opportunity to enhance such education to make Korean church grow healthy.
