이 논문은 아브라함 카이퍼(Abraham Kuyper) 사상의 세계관을 현대성의 맥락에서 재해석하는 것을 목표로 한다. 이 연구는카이퍼의 사상이 오늘날의 다원주의적 사회에서 기독교 신앙이어떻게 다양한 세계관과 견해를 포용하고, 동시에 자신의 독특한정체성을 유지할 수 있는지를 탐구하는 데 관심을 둔다. 카이퍼의 사상을 반립이나 일반 은혜로 환원하지 않고, ‘맥락적 읽기’를통해 통합적으로 분석하였다. 특히 카이퍼가 신앙과 학문, 교회와사회, 성경적 진리와 세속적 지식의 상호 대화를 중요시했던 점, 다른 세계관을 비판적으로 활용하는 태도로 신학을 재구성하고신학과 신앙의 관계를 새롭게 조명했던 점을 부각한다. 이 과정에서 카이퍼 관점의 시대적 한계가 드러나기도 하지만, 그의 사상을 당시의 맥락에서 재해석하면, ‘신학은 학문이 아니다’라는개혁주의생명신학의 명제는 현대적으로 충분히 정당하다는 점이입증된다. 이 연구는 카이퍼에 대한 통합적 접근의 중요성을 강조하며, 오늘날 공공 영역에서 기독교 신앙이 의미 있는 역할을 할 수있는 방법에 대한 통찰을 제시한다. 또한 카이퍼 사상의 원칙을비판적으로 재평가하고 재적용함으로써, 현대의 복잡한 사회적, 문화적 맥락 속에서 개혁주의생명신학이 기독교의 독특성을 유지하면서도 현대 사회와 소통할 수 있는 잠재력이 있음을 보여주고자 한다.
Abstract
This paper aims to reinterpret Abraham Kuyper’s worldview in a contemporary context. The study focuses on how Kuyper’s ideas can help Christianity in today’s pluralistic society to embrace diverse worldviews and perspectives while maintaining its unique identity. Instead of emphasizing Kuyper’s concepts of antithesis or common grace in isolation, the analysis is conducted through a ‘contextual reading.’ This approach highlights Kuyper’s emphasis on the interaction between faith and scholarship, church and society, and biblical truth and secular knowledge. Additionally, it underscores Kuyper’s attitude of critically engaging with other worldviews to reconstruct theology and shed new light on the relationship between theology and faith. Although the limitations of Kuyper’s perspective are evident in this process, reinterpreting his ideas within the context of his time demonstrates that the thesis of ‘Reformed Life Theology,’ ‘Theology is not a science,’ is sufficiently justified in contemporary terms. This research emphasizes the importance of Kuyper’s integrative approach and provides valuable insights into how Christian faith can play a meaningful role in the public sphere today. By critically reassessing and reapplying Kuyper’s principles, the study showcases the potential for ‘Reformed Life Theology’ to maintain theological distinctiveness while engaging with modern societal and cultural complexities. Through contextual reading, this research underscores how Kuyper’s thought can contribute to the ongoing dialogue between different worldviews and faith traditions in a pluralistic world.
