Abstract

This study conducted in-depth interviews with nine professors of Christian universities based on Reformed Life Theology from an integrated perspective of faith and scholarship to deeply explore the individual and subjective calling awareness of Christian professors working at Christian universities based on Reformed Life Theology and to identify the essential structure and characteristics. The interview content was analyzed by applying Giorgi’s phenomenological research method. As a result of the study, the essential structure of Christian professors’ calling awareness was derived from four essential themes, eight sub-themes, and 30 meaning units. The four essential themes were derived from the nature and awareness of calling, integration of faith and scholarship, campus evangelization and roles, and self-reflection and capacity building for carrying out calling. They recognized that becoming a professor was only a result of God’s guidance and grace, and that their academic activities as professors had the meaning of service and ministry within the Christian worldview. They also considered working at a Christian university to be a good place for the evangelization of God, and they recognized that they should actively participate in helping non-believing students meet God. It was recognized that personal spiritual growth through words and prayer is essential and that one cannot fully fulfill one’s role as a Christian professor without the help of the Holy Spirit. This can be seen as the will of Christian professors to recognize their profession as God’s calling, integrate faith into academics and education, contribute to campus evangelization, and fulfill their calling through continuous spiritual growth. Through the results of this study, it was confirmed that the calling awareness of Christian professors working at Christian universities based on Reformed Life Theology is linked to the core values of Reformed Life Theology and the seven practical movements of Reformed Life Theology. In addition, this study provided an important theoretical basis for further solidifying the educational direction and identity that Christian universities based on Reformed Life Theology should pursue. It is expected that this study will be used as basic data for developing teaching capacity enhancement programs such as integrated faith-academic education, spirituality training, and mentoring programs to help Christian professors working at Christian universities based on Reformed Life Theology more clearly recognize their calling and effectively integrate it into their education and research activities.
