Abstract
In 1760 (the 36th year of King Yeongjo’s reign), Yeongjo moved to Gyeonghuigung, thereby separating his residence from that of Crown Prince Sado. This relocation visibly reflected the discord between father and son and was intended to dismantle the power structure centered around the Crown Prince. Along with this move, Yeongjo held royal lectures (gyeongyeon) at Gyeonghyeondang, where the Crown Prince resided, symbolically transforming it into a space of restored royal authority. Toward the end of his reign, Yeongjo implemented the royal grandson’s regency at this location—an act that not only set it apart from Crown Prince Sado’s regency at Simindang, but also allowed Yeongjo to align himself with King Sukjong as the rightful successor to the throne. This was intened to establish a legitimate royal lineage that bypassed King Gyeongjong and Crown Prince Sado, framing the succession as a direct line from Sukjong to Yeongjo and then to Jeongjo. In this context, the palace management centered on Gyeonghuigung Palace during the later years of King Yeongjo’s reign can be seen as a response to the political repercussions of a series of events, including the appointment of the royal grandson as Crown Prince and his regency during King Gyeongjong’s reign, the death of Crown Prince Hyojang, and the regency of Crown Prince Sado.
