Abstract

Examined in this article is the official funeral arranged for crown prince Euoso(懿昭世孫), the grandson of king Yeongjo and also the oldest son of the late crown prince Sado(思悼世子), in order to determine the internal positioning of structures inside palaces, as well as external pathways leading to them. Also examined is the inside of the Euiso-myo shrine. This Euiso Seson is a unique figure, as his life shows us how a ‘crown-prince who was the sitting king’s grandson and not son’ actually grew up and died. Since his death(薨逝) took place and till his funeral was completed by his enshrinement(入廟), he was treated virtually as a normal crown prince even when he was not the son but the grandson of the present king. He was treated so in terms of protocols, details and the timetable. Of course there were differences in terms of size, quantity and numbers of involved materials. Since his death, all the procedures that led to the Dae’ryeom(大歛) stage took place in the Tongmyeong-jeon(通明殿) Hall, while series of events that began with the establishment of the Binjeon chamber(“Seongbin, 成殯”) and continued before the very initiation of the funeral(“Bal’in, 發靷”) took place in the Sungmun-dang(崇文堂)[Bin’gung(殯宮)] chamber. The funeral procession reached the place readied for the royal mausoleum(墓所) through the Yangju(楊州) An’hyeon(鞍峴) region. Memorial services from the Cho’wu-je(初虞祭) giving till the Damje(禫祭) service all took place in Gang’seo-weon(講書院, Sungmun-dang)[Hon’gung(魂宮)], and the enshrinement ceremony was held in Chang’eui-gung(彰義宮), which had served as the residence for Yeongjo before he was enthroned. With the exception of the procedures that were held after the initiation of the funeral, all stages concerning Euiso’s death were held inside the palace. The internal layout of Euiso-myo(懿昭廟) can be determined by illustrated sources of information(圖說). There were three gates leading to the shrine, which were designed so in order to separate as well as isolate the sacred place from outsiders, in a fashion we can see from many other Joseon palaces as well as structures with similar capacities. The positioning of structures inside the Euiso-myo shrine features a fashion which was also employed in other shrines that were constructed at the time, suggesting that there could have been a norm that was observed for structures built to serve this particular purpose. Sources (including the Eui’gwe ritual protocol manuals) depicting the structures inside the Euiso-myo shrine, which was as said earlier erected at Yeongjo’s earlier residence Chang’eui-gung, display figures identical to the Jeong’wu(正宇) space described in the Euiso-myo illustrations. We can also confirm that the pathways leading to the outside of the shrine as described in the Euiso-myo illustration matches the roadway which is depicted to penetrate a group of structures indicated in read letters upon the Chang’eui-gung layout. We can see that the layout picture of Chang’eui-gung is well representing the internal layout of, and also the pathways leading to, the Euiso-myo shrine.
